A summer working on the research side of a small, founder-run trading operation. You will take a question that has not been answered yet, do the work properly, and defend the result. The point is not to shadow anyone. The point is to own something small and finish it.
What you would do
- Take one research question end to end: framing, data, method, result, write-up
- Test ideas honestly, including the ones that turn out not to work, and say so
- Build the tooling your own work needs, in Python, rather than waiting for it to exist
- Read the literature around your question and report what is already known
- Present your work at the end of the summer, in writing and out loud
Who it is for
- Students in mathematics, statistics, physics, computer science, engineering or quantitative finance
- Comfortable with probability and statistics, and able to write Python that another person can read
- Coursework or projects in stochastic processes, derivatives, optimisation or machine learning are relevant, though none of them is a requirement on its own
- Able to say "I do not know" and then go and find out
- Based in Australia, or able to work Australian hours
How the process runs
- Apply through the form below. A person reads every application
- A short call, mostly about you and how you think
- A written problem in your own discipline, built to take an evening rather than a weekend
- A longer conversation about your work, and an answer either way with a reason
Every applicant gets an answer. Questions before you apply, or anything on this page that is unclear: careers@optilic.com.
